Understanding the Challenges of Updating Product Data on Walmart

Walmart is one of the largest online marketplaces in the world, with millions of products available for purchase by consumers. However, for sellers who use Walmart’s platform, updating product data can often be a difficult experience. The most common issue is the inability to update some or all of their product data, even when there are no apparent errors and the data feeds are successful. In this article, we’ll explore why this happens and what you can do to address these issues.

A major reason for the difficulties in updating product data on Walmart is due to the fact that product content and sellers are ranked. This was introduced to prevent a constant flow of updates from multiple sources when there is more than one seller for a specific listing. Walmart uses algorithms to select the best content to display for each product to give customers the best possible experience.

If you’re selling a product that’s also being sold by other sellers, it’s possible that the content uploaded by another seller might be ranked higher, which means your changes won’t be displayed on the listing page. You can quickly check which of your product’s attributes are locked for editing on the product edit page of your Walmart Seller Center. If you see a red exclamation mark next to a product attribute, it means that a higher-ranked seller controls that field. You can still submit new product data as a content suggestion, but there’s no guarantee that it will be approved.

In the event that you can’t push the data and Walmart isn’t accepting your content suggestion, you can also submit an appeal through the support case. However, there’s still no guarantee that your appeal will be approved.

Brand Owners: Requesting Content Ownership

If you’re a brand owner, you can request content ownership for your approved items by submitting a support case (category path: Items and Inventory > Content Update Errors). Once approved, you should be marked as the content owner for specific items and be able to update them without any issues.

Finally, if you face issues with trademark or copyright violations or notice counterfeits of your product, you can register with the Walmart brand portal to help protect your items.

If you follow these steps and understand that Walmart may not allow you to update some of your data, product management may be a much less frustrating experience.

Hi Pat, as a consumer, the easiest way would be probably to go to https://www.walmart.com/help, and click Chat button to report an issue. You can also contact a seller of a product, as Walmart provides now contact information of all merchants. If you send me details which product you would like to fix, I can try to help you.
